A soft answer after a long day
The proverb does not ask whether you are a soft person. It asks what comes out of your mouth in the first ten minutes at home.
A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.
A grievous word is often just a true frustration said too fast. The drain, the homework, the van that would not start. None of that is imaginary. The proverb still stands.
A soft answer is not lying. It is choosing the next sentence instead of the one that would feel good for four seconds. Ellen will tell you she fails this in the kitchen more than on the show.
If you need a practice, pick one door: the front door, the van door, the classroom door. Pause before you speak. Ask one ordinary question. Let wrath wait.
