Work that does not need a spotlight

Paul writes to people with ordinary jobs. He does not tell them to find more meaningful work. He tells them to do the work in front of them as if the Lord were the one checking the invoice.

Colossians 3:23-24 · King James Version
And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

Caleb still drives a van two days a week. Ellen still grades papers at the kitchen table. Neither job will be in a highlight reel. Both jobs feed people and keep a promise.

Heartily does not mean cheerfully at every moment. It means you do not phone it in because nobody important is watching. Somebody is watching. That is the point of the verse.

If your work is heavy this month, you do not have to baptize it with a caption. Finish the route. Tell the truth on the timesheet. Leave the bench cleaner than you found it.

The inheritance in the next line is not a bonus check. It is a reminder that the small jobs are already spoken for.
